Where can I get a copy of Lemmi's moderator? I thought that it required an emulator for DOS or something like that.

I'd be willing to experiment and see if I could come up with a suitable tutorial in English.

The greatness of the program is that you could customize the game actions against the 18xx game model it implemented. And there were many configuration files for the games at the time. The Con was that if the model did not include a feature, you were SOL. But a good operator knew how to effect the game status in "raw" operations.

The best way to describe it is a customized spread sheet.
The experienced operator has to know how to enter the game transactions. But there is minimal rules checking, no map or routes, and I'm not sure there is a log. I must say that I never played a game with it. Finally ran out of patience.

I much preferred the flow of how Rails has come. Back in the day, I developed a Visual Basic (v3) 1830 moderator and hosted several email games using it, before I moved on.

Salutations, gentlefolk,

Speaking as an old grognard, here ...

Tried using Lemmi's program, ten years or so ago. It works OK, but I
needed my sanity points for Real Life.

_Rails_ may not be The Future, now, but if you'd demo'd it to the table
at Origins 78, playing the first 1829 games in North America, we'd have
been mighty impressed ... Give it a try.

<pre>Get Lemmie's moderator running (in DOS-BOX) and give it a try with a simple game of 1830.

I am sure, after a couple of games you will get used to the sometimes tricky handling of the program.

The program really speeds up the whole thing. Three playere games can be done way undere two hours!

Just give it a try.

I thin it is the 4th I have played in which a long stall occurred on 3Ts followed by an explosion of shorts and starts. The scenariois at one end of the probability curve but not where it flattens out.

5-share and 10-share companies are vulnerable because of shorts but 2-square are vulnerable because of their loan limit. I think there are several ways to win in 1817--and even more ways to lose.

Not even that will help (or let's say, even then it will require
heroic effort to learn using the moderator just from the written
docs).

The UI (which is, BTW, even translated into English) is not optimized
for intuitive operation, but for _efficient_ operation. The best way
to learn it is by looking over the shoulders of somebody who already
is good at using it.

Now you might say, somebody should just write a proper Howto document
(preferably in English, and starting from the very beginninge, i.e.
that you can't run the moderator directly under any contemporary OS,
you first have to install and configure dosbox...), and all problems
are solved.

Unfortunately, that's not quite true. Lemmi has disappeared from the
18xx universe quite some time ago, and the moderator is not actively
developed. It's really a great piece of software, especially if you
take into account that it is essentially a 20 year old DOS program,
but the latest game for which full support was implemented is
something like Helmut Ohley's</pre>

I have tried Lemmi's moderator using a translation (and knowing a
little German). It didn't help. To get a benefit from it, it's not
enough just to know the language, you actually have to be German. Or
maybe Austrian would do.

I do have a physical copy of the game (and people would want to play the actual game).

Has no one ever created a translation (in terms of instructions) for Lemmi's moderator? I mean - even if the instruction said, "click on the [german word]" -- that would be fine.

No other real options? (I may cross-post on BGG, but I thought I'd check here first. I'm skeptical there are people on BGG that would know that aren't here, but it makes sense to at least check.

<pre>The best known moderating program for 18xx is Rails, a Java program
you can download for free from rails.sf.net. Rails is actually more
of a play-by-computer program; you don't need an actual set of the
game you're playing, but you do need at least a copy of the rules.
It currently handles about 8 games.

There's also the program called "Lemmi's moderator", which is strictly
a moderator so you have to have a physical copy of the game. It can
speed things up a lot once you know how to use it, but it's German and
most of the docs exist only in that language.

Either of these is much better than the old Avalon Hill 1830 computer
game (which is out of print but can probably be found by searching).

<pre>Hello all,

I've never used a computer moderator before for an 18xx, and -- quite frankly -- wouldn't even know where to start.

Are there some that are exceptional compared to others? Is there suitable (comprehensive) instructions? And, does it really cut down the playing time? My group is notoriously slow (an 1830 game could easily go seven hours) and something that would speed things up (besides the poker chips, which we already use) would be a big help.

Also - are some moderators multi-system? For example, if instead of 1830, I wanted to play 18AL or 18FL -- are there ways to use the same moderator? Or, does each game have its own moderator?

Thanks for any help (and direct links) you can provide!

Chris
