 S2_5 has now been branched, and TRUNK is open for 2.6 development. While
2.6 development in TRUNK is already possible, our priority should be in
stable branches, especially in getting 2.4.0 finally out. Now that I've got
the S2_5 branching out of the way, I'll try to sum current 2.4.0 blockers
in the coming days.

 When I added Alien World ruleset strings to translations, it turned out
that one gettext error was crept in to those files. Fix for that is in
patch #3890, and that patch was applied to my local tree when I created
po-files uploaded to http://www.cazfi.net/freeciv/translations/S2_6/
 I've uploaded po-files from all the active branches to cazfi.net, and here
are current translation statistics from them:

Shortcuts are the bane of my l10n life, you always have to guess at 
scope and which letters you already used, then spend a lot of time 
chasing after wrong ones. I usually just make a stab and can't be 
bothered about fixing wrong ones, just not worth the time. I wish there 
was an opt out that would allow the program to put them in automatically 
based on a list of preferences for the locale (i.e. use abcdefhimnorstu 
before gl and worst case use àìòù etc...). I know some locales like to 
follow established patterns but for locales like hours, there is no pattern.

Hello

Here is the updated 2.4 fr.po file - could someone commit it there, and 
also to TRUNK, before 2.5 is branched ? I just updated the keyboard 
shortcuts, and really, I don't want to do this twice :-)

Talking about shortcuts... some of them could not be done because some 
strings are used /at the same time/ in menus and elsewhere, so I can't 
put an underscore in the translation.
What would the developers - and the other translators - think of adding 
a specific tag (like "menu") for strings that will end in a menu ?

We're just a couple of days from branching S2_5 02-May. My timezone is EEST
(UTC +3), and I'm about start the branching activities as soon as clock
hits 00:00 here. So for you in western Europe, let alone in Americas, it
will be still 01-May.

After the bracnhing we will have four active branches: S2_3, S2_4, S2_5 and
TRUNK. That's more thna we'd like to divide our attention to, but at the
same time we don't want to postpone branching further and letting even more
new features to get in to trunk then to be polished in stable branch
forever. Let's hope that time between S2_5 branching and 2.5.0 release is
not longer than the road from S2_4 to 2.4.0 has been.

I'll refresh all po-files under version control against latest strings
before the branching. One of the new features in 2.6 is inclusion of Alien
World ruleset ( http://www.cazfi.net/freeciv/alien/ ). Strings from the
ruleset will be added to trunk translation as soon as S2_5 has been safely

translations you just sent.

Sorry for being late - I'm a bit overworked lately, I'm afraid...

Here is the updated translation of a rather old (1 month already !) 
fr.po file found on cazfi.net... Could someone commit it for me, please ?
Since the source is a bit old, and no string freeze has taken place, I 
guess the file will not reach 100%. If a new fr.po is made available 
somewhere, I'd be glad to finish the work...

 I have some tickets for S2_4 "Ready to test", but I'm not going to commit
any of them before beta2 has been tagged. Feel free to proceed with the
release as it suits you.

 I'll try to be active downstream in OpenEmbedded meta-games layer and to
get release there too during the weekend.

 i have been sketching wrapper project for gettext since 2006 to achieve
something similar, but I seem to get nowhere. My goal has been a bit more
complicated though:
 Finnish has 15 grammatical cases. Translation is not really fluent when
sentences must be constructed so that, e.g., unit names are always in the
nominative case, and never in any of the other 14 cases. While I don't want
to translated unit names to 15 different cases, having selection of, say, 3
important cases would give a lot more freedom to sentence construction
(make it less like an logic puzzle to arrange all the parts to fit
nominative case). At the same time we don't want to force English to have
three identical unit names, and to make English speaking coders to guess
which one of the functions unit_name_nominative() / unit_name_genetive() /
unit_name_elative() ... to use in constructing the sentences - not to
mention that what is correct function for constructing translation for one
language is wrong for the other. So translators sho

So, as it stands, the list of localisations that get this behaviour is
hardcoded in the code (it's just "fi"). Any other translator who wants
to play with it has to recompile (or pretend to be Finnish for the
duration).

I've been wondering how to put this behaviour (and possibly others,
although I hope we don't do too much of this sort of thing) under
translators' control.
How eeevil would it be to invent a magic msgid "< at >< at >< at >I18N_OPTIONS< at >< at >< at >" or
similar, which is never presented to the user (nor its translation), but
whose msgstr (specified in the .po file) contains a set of strings like
"uppercase_first frobnicate_plurals" which are read by the code to
control these sorts of global behaviours?
(Suitably warded round with TRANS comments explaining that this msgid is
magic and documenting what all this does, of course.)

This is a bit of an abuse of gettext, but seems like it should work. Any
reason why it's a terrible idea? Anyone seen a trick like this used
elsewhere (or another solution to the same problem)

At last, we're expecting to release 2.4.0-beta2 next weekend sometime
(27-28 April). We have a vague hope that this will be the last beta
before we go to release candidates.

For translators: since this is a beta, I can't promise a string freeze,
although I'm not aware of any expected string changes right now.
Files at <http://www.cazfi.net/freeciv/translations/S2_4/> are I think
fresh. Translation updates are of course welcome.
