While I don't own a board, I've played on numerous boards. Oddly, the one I liked playing on was the least attractive (and as I remember, the most expensive). The playing surface wasn't wood, but more like a light-colored Masonite surface. It had no grain. The wood grain, as much as it made the boards more attractive, tended to affect the glide of the pieces. That is, the carom would tend to break along the grain. This was with or without silicon powder. Just my 2 cents.

I didn't bring my good board south with me - just a very basic game board as there aren't many here who are anxious to play! Travel safely north for Christmas!

Hi here is board number one under construction, eight hand rubbed coats with one to go. This is not entirely tournament specs as the lines are routed and the board is oak. Going for looks here. I had a logo to go on it for the quadrant markers but didn't work out so far so quadrants are marked with triangles on the start line. The board and base are oak plywood and the edge rails are oak. I have obtained proper discs and posts for this as well.
Cheers,

Thanks for the welcome and I look forward to meeting some of you some time. I am still working at my full time career but hope to finish soon. I have taken my vacation time to start crafting some boards. I am located outside of Toronto but the boards currently in the works will have to say made in the USA as I am working on them in Florida.
Many American friends all of whom have never heard of this game, are anxiously awaiting the unveiling. I will be providing board number 1 to be available in the clubhouse where we will introduce the game to these lucky folks!
I am home for Christmas but will be going back down and will put the old nose to the Crokinole grindstone.
Cheers,
Cy

Hi Cy, so good to see someone getting excited about Crokinole and will anxiously await more news of your boards. I hope you will post pictures of your finished product - or even a series showing the process you are using! What area of the country are you located in - US or CA - N, S, E, or W? Best of luck for a future business adventure!

Interesting story, but I don't buy it.

The earliest known crokinole board was made by craftsman Eckhardt Wettlaufer in 1876 in Perth County , Ontario , Canada . Several other domestic boards of southwestern Ontario origin dating from the 1870s have been discovered since then. Crokinole is often believed to be from Mennonite or Amish origins, but there is no factual data to support such a claim. The reason for this misconception may be due to its popularity in the Mennonite and Amish sects. The game was seen as a rather harmless fun - unlike the perception that diversions such as card playing or dancing were devil's work as held by many 19th century Protestant groups.

In 1899, Crokinole was revolutionized by what is still known today as "Eagan Opening". Tottenham, Ontario 's Thomas Eagan developed a complicated, hybrid, 3-turn opening sequence that confused, and ultimately defeated, many of Perth County's best players. The Eagan Opening has never been published, but appears to have been transmitted generation to generation by descendants of T

Just a short note to tell you that the Oliver Community center room #2 is booked for Crokinole playing every TUESDAY NIGHT AT 6.30 PM starting OCTOBER 12.

I'd appreciate it very much if you could let me know in advance if you plan to attend so the right amount of boards can be set up.

Because of my condition I welcome any who would like to help on the playing night.

It's been suggested we play more doubles. So we will try to do that. Bring your playing partner.

Since we all have the rules and scoring figured out I'll not be keeping the stats. Maybe this way we can have more of a social fun time playing Crokinole.

I think there will be several Crokinole groups playing this year......Kelowna,Summerland/Penticton, Kamloops, Osoyoos and there may be one at the coast.

When I receive their playing days and placed I'll let you know.
If you know of any other groups playing please let me know.
Remember to tell your friends about this great Canadian game and b

I have both a Willard and a Hilinski board. They both play well, are fast and exactly what I wanted in each. The Willard is a no frills serious board and the Hilinski is the "friends and guests" board that hangs on the family room wall as art. It usually gets a comment or two and best of all there is the occasional question "Whats that?"...best way I've found to get new players. (not many in North east PA)
So both are great boards and the only ones I've played except for salvaged antiques.

I purchased a Willard board about 8 to 10 years ago and am very happy with
it. It's very well constructed and will definitely last a lifetime.

I've played on other boards owned by friends - a custom Hilinski board and
an Eagle (from Mr. Crokinole) and those both were very nice too. The Eagle
probably had the finest/fastest surface of the three boards I've used, but
all three boards were excellent and I don't think you could go wrong with
any of them. It probably comes down to personal choice of what style and
color combinations you want vs. what is available.

Cheers,
Brian

Both can be over come with the 20 hole having and staying sharp on the

Since both players are using the same center hole, that doesn't really
matter for home play. But board-to-board variations could make a difference
in tournaments.

Marty

p.s. I bought a Helinski board a few years ago and am very happy with it. I
don't have any experience with other boards, so I can't really say which
ones are better or worse.
