Does the *traceback* buffer give a hint?

  Consider this:

     define make_world ()
     {
        system ("echo make_world called");
return "bar";
     }

     define concat_strings (a, b)
     {
        return a + b;
     }

     concat_strings ("hello", make_world ());

[...]

In that case, process will need to be loaded into a separate namespace:

    require ("process", "process");
    define make_backup_filename (dir, file)
    {
       variable f = path_concat (dir, file);
       () = process-&gt;new_process(["vv", "-s", f]; stdout="/dev/null").wait();
       return "";
    }

I hope this helps.

The system function returns a value that your are not handling. You
can change the above to:

    () = system(sprintf("vv -s %s &gt;/dev/null",f));

You might try using the process module to avoid escaping the filename:

   require ("process");
   define make_backup_filename (dir, file)
   {
      variable f = path_concat (dir, file);
      () = new_process(["vv", "-s", f]; stdout="/dev/null").wait();
      return "";
   }

You can add _traceback=1; to your .jedrc file. Then when an error
occurs, switch to the *traceback* buffer and look at the traceback
information.

I hope this helps.

How can one debug an error in a slang function?

I have substituted make_backup_filename() (from site.sl) with my own
version:

define make_backup_filename(dir,file) {
  variable f = dir + "/" + file;
  f = str_quote_string(f,"\"'`[](){}&lt;&gt;|;&amp;$*? \t",'\\');
  system(sprintf("vv -s %s &gt;/dev/null",f));
  return "";
}

(vv is my versioning program)

It works well when I edit just one file, but when I edit more files and
change their buffers, I get on exit :

Unable to typecast Integer_Type to String_Type

and jed continues to run.

A second exit then is successfull.

The error must be in the new make_backup_filename(), because it disapears
when I use

define make_backup_filename(dir,file) {
  return "";
}

How can I debug it?
At least I need a line number where the error happens.

You have several alternatives. The easiest may be to use autoload:

   autoload ("py_check_indentation", "pymode");
   define python_mode_hook ()
   {
      py_check_indentation ();
   }

You can also use code such as:

   define python_mode_hook ()
   {
      variable f = __get_reference ("py_check_indentation");
      if (f != NULL) (&lt; at &gt;f)();
   }

Good luck,

When opening a new python file in jed, I would like to run the py_check_indentation() function from the jedmodes version of pymodes.sl. I've got pymodes running (I can toggle between the dfa and normal syntax highlighting, for example), and have this in my .jedrc:

define python_mode_hook ()
{
   py_check_indentation();
}

but I get this error when opening a .py file

py_check_indentation is undefined

during startup. It looks like .jedrc is loaded before pymode.sl is loaded. How do I run a function from pymode in .jedrc?

Thanks,
John

The last statement indicates that when foo.tex is loaded, the function
mylatex_mode() is to be called to set the mode. But that is not what
you want. Since all you really care about is for your latex_mode_hook
function to get called when jed invokes latex_mode, you have to tell
jed where that function is located. Simply giving the search path
(via set_jed_library_path) is not enough. Try adding the following to
your .jedrc file:

   autoload ("latex_mode_hook", "mylatex");

I hope this helps.

<pre>Hi all!

As mentioned in another mail some time ago, I have redefined some
functions for latex-mode and put them into my .jedrc. But I want to
have them in a separate file now, because my .jedrc is getting a bit
messy. So I put them in $HOME/jed/mylatex.sl. Like that:

   define my_tex_insert_quote ()
   {
      ...
   }

   more functions ...

   define latex_mode_hook ()
   {
      ...
   }

In .jedrc I wrote:

   variable Jed_Home_Library = "/home/martinkl/jed";
   set_jed_library_path (Jed_Home_Library + "," + get_jed_library_path ());

   add_mode_for_extension ("mylatex", "tex");

Unfortunately mylatex.sl is either not found or not loaded. I assume
my use of add_mode_for_extension is wrong. Could someone tell me, how
to do it right?

BTW: Do I have to add a "require ()" or "autoload ()" at the beginning
of mylatex.sl to get the predefined latex-functions from latex.sl? If
so, what is the right syntax to use?

TIA, Martin

Here is one way: define your own function in your .jedrc file, e.g.,

   define my_tex_insert_quote ()
   {
      .
      .
   }

Then create a latex_mode_hook that binds a key to that function:

   define latex_mode_hook ()

      local_setkey ("my_tex_insert_quote", "\"");
   }

Good luck,

[Jed-users-l] How to redefine a function?

<pre>Hi,

when inserting a quote in LaTeX-Mode two single backticks are inserted
before or two ticks after a word. As I use csquotes, I want to modify
it, so it inserts "\enquote{" before or "}" after it (without the
quotation marks of course).

To do so, I have changed this part of tex_insert_quote() of texcom.sl:

   if (is_substr("[({\t ", char(c)))
     {
        insert_char ('`');
        if (LAST_CHAR == '"') insert_char ('`');
     }
   else
     {
        insert_char ('\'');
        if (LAST_CHAR == '"') insert_char ('\'');
     }

to that:

   if (is_substr("[({\t ", char(c)))
     {
        insert ("\\enquote{");
     }
   else
     {
        insert_char ('}');
     }

Well, it works as I wished for - but how can I make this change
permanent now, without changing the original texcom.sl? I suppose I
have to redefine tex_insert_quote() somewhere in my home-dir but I do
not know how and where.

Thank you for your help!

The '()' syntax is obviously closer to describing what you want (ie,
discard the return value), whereas the 'pop' disguises things quite a
bit.

If you use 'pop', you also need to know how many return values to pop
from the stack. Using '()' is much more convenient and gives you the
opportunity to assign some of the return values. For example,
    variable mode;
    (mode,) = what_mode()

both editor then do the same file versioning. See:

http://fex.rus.uni-stuttgart.de/fstools/jedv.html

Writing file versions is done automatically. You need to call jedv
manually only if you want to restore or review.

Correction: it is site.sl
Meanwhile I have found --help :-}

But -h is still missing.
Modifing command_line_hook() to:

  if (__argv[i] == "--help" or __argv[i] == "-help" or __argv[i] == "-h")
    () = evalfile ("jedusage");

does not work: I still get a buffer named "-h" and no usage.

There is "jed --help". See also "man jed".

<pre>I am missing a "jed -h" usage message, like most UNIX programs have.

For example:

$ vi -h

usage: vim [arguments] [file ..] edit specified file(s)
   or: vim [arguments] - read text from stdin
   or: vim [arguments] -t tag edit file where tag is defined
   or: vim [arguments] -q [errorfile] edit file with first error

Arguments:
   -- Only file names after this
   -v                   Vi mode (like "vi")
   -e                   Ex mode (like "ex")
(...)

One have to read defaults.sl to know which jed command line options exist.
