As someone who lives or works in Berkeley, I know you’re aware of what a critical issue parking is, in so many ways. Tomorrow night, we have an opportunity to move forward with innovative solutions for our city and I wanted to make sure you knew about it.

Will you join me at this City Council Work Session in support of goBerkeley?

goBerkeley City Council Work Session

City Council Chambers
2134 Martin Luther King Jr. Way

Two years ago, TransForm began working with Berkeley city staff and leaders to propose goBerkeley, an innovative program that combines demand-responsive parking pricing, universal transit passes, car-sharing incentives, real-time signs and more.

Now the pilot project is nearly ready to go, after a few more choices and approval by the Berkeley City Council. No Council action is expected tomorrow, but this Work Session may very well determine whether the City goes ahead with the parking changes planned for September 2013.

We know we can fix the p</pre>

The current Caltrans Highway Design Manual precludes most kinds of protected bikeways. This bill would change that.

"Passage of this bill would usher in a new era of bikeway development in this state. Californians of diverse ages and abilities will find bicycling a reasonable and safe way to get around. Communities will more easily be able to take advantage of the windfalls in health and livability and economy that almost always follow the development of protected bikeways."

Sample Letter &lt; at &gt; http://transformca.org/files/ab_1193_fact_sheet.pdf

“This bill would declare the Legislature’s intent to enact subsequent legislation that would authorize all city, county, regional, and other local agencies responsible for the development or operation of bikeways or roadways to exercise the same discretion in the design of their bikeways that they exercise in the design of local streets, roads, and highways.”

A Car-Free Lifestyle

"It almost feels illegal to be this free," said a bicyclist weaving big loops in the center of Broadway during Oakland's last Oaklavía event in 2010. The event, which closed Broadway from Grand Avenue to Jack London Square to vehicle traffic, was the city's first experiment in a growing international movement that seeks to (temporarily) cede city streets to pedestrians and bicyclists. On Sunday, June 9, Oaklavía returns, this time to the other heart of the city, Lake Merritt.

In urban areas, most of our public space is, for better or worse, often at the mercy of the vehicles zooming through it. What happens when we take cars off the road can thus be hard to imagine. That's why the spirit of Ciclovía — which started in Bogotá, Colombia in 1973 and has since spread to cities across the world — can border on the transcendent. "It's almost a magical thing that takes place when people go to the forbidde</pre>

<pre>It is unfortunate that Chronicle reporter Jaxon Van Derbeken chooses to belittle the bike path on the Bay Bridge by claiming that Caltrans included it to "placate" cycling activists in this May 29, 2013 article.

One could argue that the new span of the bridge was built to "placate" motoring activists, although we're not likely to see that word used for expanding or "improving" highways or bridges.

The word "enhancement" is also used to belittle bicycle infrastructure.

Cycling Kids: The True Indicator of a Bike-Friendly City
Wrapping up a trip to Copenhagen (the lucky dog is now in Amsterdam), Jonathan Maus of Bike Portland wrote that a true hospitable cycling environment is one that safely accommodates children.

Young children ride bikes in Copenhagen in great numbers. And they do it by themselves through the city’s busiest intersections amid massive groups of riders. Before I came here, I expected to see lots of families biking together; but I wasn’t prepared to see so many kids riding their own bikes.

Maus describes what it’s like to ride in “everyday” bike traffic in the Danish capital: “There’s a huge mob of other people cycling around you and suddenly you no longer feel like a tiny ant next to a massive machine that can crush you. Instead you feel relaxed, safe, powerful and confident. It’s that type of environment that allows kids to ride on their own.”

Hey commuters: take a hike

By now, nearly everyone has heard of Bike to Work Day, even if they haven’t participated in the annual event. Now there’s a new day to promote human-powered transportation.

On Friday, San Francisco will become the first city in the nation to host Walk to Work Day.

Commuters are encouraged to walk at least 15 minutes of their trip to work, though those willing to take longer hikes are certainly welcome to do so.

To entice folks to put a little foot-power into their commutes, Walk San Francisco, the event organizer, is inviting walkers to stop by a handful of hubs where they’ll be offered snacks and beverages, stickers, chances to win prizes, and a Clipper card pre-loaded with a ride home in case they don’t want to stroll both ways.

Like its older sibling, Bike to Work Day, Walk to Work Day will also have “celebrity” walkers, if you consider politicians and city officials to be celebrities. M</pre>

Pilot program lets bikes board rush-hour commuter trains between some Newburyport-Rockport stations

By Matt Rocheleau, Town Correspondent

The MBTA launched a pilot program this month that allows passengers to bring bikes aboard commuter rail trains between certain stations on the Newburyport-Rockport line during morning and afternoon rush hour travel times.

The T’s general policy has been to ban bikes aboard its commuter rail trains during weekday “peak commute periods,” a policy that remains in effect for all other commuter rail lines.

Times when bikes are allowed are designated by a bike symbol on train schedules.

Maker Faire: A Model for Encouraging Car-Free Transportation to Big Events

The runaway success of Maker Faire, the annual San Mateo festival that celebrates do-it-yourself technology and crafts, has led organizers to get creative in encouraging attendees to come without a car and avert a traffic mess.

Since Maker Faire’s debuted in 2006, organizers have developed a model program for managing traffic demand for the growing number of attendees — estimated at more than 120,000 this year — who flock to the two-day event to see the eccentric and occasionally practical inventions of 1,000 “makers.”

‘Ode to Bike Sharing’ - NYTimes.com

I created this short film from a message left on my home answering machine. It’s part of a project I call Animation Hotline: People are invited to call (212) 683-2490 and leave a short story, poem, secret, passion, life lesson, experience, experiment, list, rant, opinion, news item or basically anything — as long as it is a minute or less. I then choose messages to turn into short animations, which I post regularly online.

I feel as if New York is such an insane city and at the same time so magical and so difficult. Of course, it’s hard to get around the city. It’s challenging for everyone </pre>

Leading Boston bicycle advocates to study how to make city biking safer

By Jaclyn Reiss, Globe Correspondent

Boston bicycle advocacy officials said they will study safety concerns as enthusiasts demanded action after six riders were killed locally in the past year and a half -- including a woman last weekend.

The annual biking summit on Tuesday, dubbed “State of the Hub,” comes after visiting MIT scientist Kanako Miura, 36, was struck and killed by a truck driver as she was bicycling near the intersection of Beacon Street and Charlesgate West in the Fenway/Kenmore neighborhood on Sunday.

“This is the sixth fatality in 12 months – that’s six times as much as previous years,” said Brighton resident Ren Jender, 48, who noted that she also often cycles through that same intersection on her way home. “This to me is a crisis, and I do not understand why </pre>

Livable Berkeley is excited the City is considering a Pilot Parklet program in Berkeley, and we strongly support this effort!

The Transportation Commission is considering key policy decisions around parklets this Thursday, May 16. See our full letter to the commission.

Let the them know you support a Pilot Parklet program in Berkeley!

Last October Livable Berkeley was the lead organizer for Sunday Streets Berkeley, a widely successful event that brought over 40,000 people to Downtown Berkeley.

For this event Livable Berkeley sponsored a “Pop-Up Parklet,” which was used and enjoyed throughout the day as a practical demonstration of how parklets can be successful in the City of Berkeley. Our “Pop-Up Parklet” meets all of the requirements for a sidewalk grade, wheelchair accessible parklet and can be set up again. The parklet, in use, can be viewed in the StreetsFilm video about Sunday Streets Berkeley.
Livable Berkeley believes a Pilot Parklet program will be s</pre>
