Where did the name for the Stump WM come from?

I completely understand how "Ratpoison" got its name, but what about "Stump?"

<pre>Hello. I've recently bought second display and configured my machine to
work with two separate X screens. I switch between them using key bindings
to "snext"/"sprev" commands. But I find quite irritating to have one set of
bindings to switch between screens and another to switch between frames.

I would like to introduce click-following focus behaviour instead. As I can
understand by reading sources I need to call #'frame-raise-window (or maybe
#'pull-window) somewhere in event handler. Maybe I also need to define
proper event mask in *window-events*. It's just my suggestions.

So my question is this: Can we make focus to follow clicks with low cost
(in time) in stumpwm? Any suggestions?

There is a command (dump-window-placement-rules file) to dump the
current placemnt to a file for use with
(restore-window-placement-rules file)

Thus, in a nutshell, you have to create the group layout you want by hand,
dump the layout (which contains only the frames you created) with
(dump-group-to-file file) or (dump-desktop-to-file file) -- the latter
will dump ALL groups, the first one only the current group --

and dump the window placement rules which tell stumpwm which window has
to be placed in which fram with

(dump-window-placement-rules file).

to restore you have to do the reverse:
(restore-from-file my-layout)
(restore-window-placement-rules my placement-rules)
(launch all applications you want)

Greetings,

Ruthard

<pre>Hi Bill,

Did you setup some window placement rules?

Here is part of the things that I am doing:

,----
| ;; Clear rules
| (clear-window-placement-rules)
|
| (define-frame-preference "System"
| ;; frame raise lock (lock AND raise == jumpto)
| (0 t t :title "htop")
| (0 t t :title "aumix")
| )
|
| (define-frame-preference "Default"
| ;; frame raise lock (lock AND raise == jumpto)
| (0 t t :title "emacs")
| ;; (0 t t :class "Xpdf")
| )
|
| (define-frame-preference "Misc"
| ;; frame raise lock (lock AND raise == jumpto)
| (0 t t :class "Firefox")
| )
|
| (run-commands "gnewbg System" "gnewbg Misc")
`----

The important thing is to find out the match properties for your applications.

I use show-window-properties to display them. I have bound it to the
root-map to make the command easy accessible:

(define-key *root-map* (kbd "I") "show-window-properties")

<pre>I'm close guys, but I just don't know how to solve the latest problem. Here
is the code that I have at the end of my .stumpwmrc file:

;; Now to load a saved desktop and fill it up! (Cross your fingers.)
(defun myws ()
  (restore-from-file "~/bin/stump/desktop.stump")
  (run-commands "exec totem")
  (run-shell-command "sleep 5s")
  (run-commands "fnext")
  (run-commands "emacs")
  (run-shell-command "sleep 5s")
  (run-commands "fnext")
  (run-commands "exec firefox"))

(myws)

I restore the desktop layout (which works) and then attempt to fill the
frames with running programs. I thought "sleep 5s" would help, but it
didn't.

I also tried using:

(restore-from-file "~/bin/stump/desktop.stump")
(run-commands "exec totem" "fselect 1" "emacs" "fselect 2" "exec firefox")

And:

(restore-from-file "~/bin/stump/desktop.stump")
(run-commands "exec totem" "fnext" "emacs" "fnext" "exec firefox")

In each case, the programs all come up perfectly, but I just can't seem to
have them start up in the appropriate frames</pre>

Doing the restart-soft changes the order of the frames within the group

Any thoughts and/or suggestions ?

Take a look at my configuration:

http://www.xsteve.at/prg/stumpwm/

I don't start the applications at startup. However they are started
using run-or-raise when I first use them. I am happy with this approach.

You could try to use run-shell-command to start an application.

I use it for example to do this on startup:

(run-shell-command "setxkbmap -model evdev")

You have to create them manually before the use of
define-frame-preference. I have the following in my configuration file:

(when *initializing*
  (mapcar #'gnewbg
  '(
    "mail"
    "org"
    "chat"
    "music"
    "web"
    "admin"
    "devel"
    "docs"
    "monitoring"
    )))

The info command is bound to «C-t i», showing the dimensions, window
number and title of the current window. I added the following:

(define-key *root-map* (kbd "I") "info %g :: %r :: %c")

To show the gravity, role and class. With this is easier to manually
write frame preferences by inspecting the windows you want to write
rules for.

That will be great!

Welcome!

Have taken a look to define-frame-preference?

Yes, mostly, I think.

<pre>Hello StumpWM Developers,

My name is Bill Zimmerly and I am new to using this window manager.

I think it shows tremendous promise as exactly the WM I've been looking
for, but it's sometimes difficult to find the information I need to modify
it.

So far, I have a good .stumpwmrc file that does a lot of what I want to do
in configuring stumpwm at startup, but there is one area that I find
bewilderingly complex: startup applications and configuration of their
windows! (Something that I can see is a STRENGTH of stumpwm, but I just
can't seem to "grok" how.)

Can someone show me some exact startup code that will do this? (See below)

Workspace 1 (3 windows)
Top/Left = Xterm
Bottom/Left = Totem
Right = Firefox

Workspace 2 (2 windows)
Left = Xterm
Right = Emacs

I also get confused by what exactly a "group" is. I think it's the same as
a "workspace" in Gnome, for example, but I'm just not sure.

Thank you!
- Bill
