[ANN] Release 1.3.29 of Task Coach

Hi,

We're happy to announce release 1.3.29 of Task Coach. This is a mixed bugfix
and feature release.

Bugs fixed:
- Fix password entry on Windows. (SF#1410)
- Fix category filter menu on Windows 7 (SF#1281)

Feature added:
- Display a few days of previous and next month in the calendar popup.

What is Task Coach?

Task Coach is a simple task manager that allows for hierarchical tasks,
i.e. tasks in tasks. Task Coach is open source (GPLv3+) and is developed
using Python and wxPython. You can download Task Coach from:

http://taskcoach.org/

In addition to the source distribution, packaged distributions are available
for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and BSD.

Note that although we consider Task Coach to be stable software,
and we do our best to prevent bugs, it is always wise to back up your task
file regularly, and especially when upgrading to a new release.

The category structures I posted should be more like this:

top-level2

AFTER:

manual top-level3
manual top-level4
---> manual sub2
top-level1

I'm not one of the main developers, but based on my one attempt you can create a category hierarchy by editing the .tsk file directly. It requires some basic knowledge of XML and LOTS of backups. ;-) I would suggest starting with an empty .tsk file if possible - it just seems safer.

This is what I did that seems to have worked:

1) created a new .tsk file
2) created the following category hierarchy in Task Coach:

top-level1
    sub1
top-level2

3) then I closed the .tsk file in Task Coach and opened it in my favorite text editor*
4) I manually added the following just underneath the last line for the existing categories:

<category subject="manual top-level3" />
<category subject="manual top-level4">
<category subject="manual sub2" />
</category>

5) Save the changes, closed the file, then reopened the .tsk file in Task Coach

After doing this I have the following category structure:

manual top-level3
manual top-level4
    manual sub2
top-level1
    sub1
top-level2

This is what I intended, so I'm call

There is no feature like this built-in right now, sorry. You could post a request for this at https://taskcoach.uservoice.com/

It's a fine idea.

Otherwise, maybe you could mess with the .tsk file (a copy, don't lose the original) in a text editor, and change things that way. The main developers might have more insights than I about exactly how this could be done or whether it makes any sense.

Best,
Aaron

Thanks Aaron! My brother (systems student) said: "Maybe you are putting
that structure of the company on the wrong side?" "It looks like it belongs
to the Categories side, and then only put the real Tasks in the left
pannel".
That was click in my mind.

On the other hand, you saying this was very clarifying:

"Note also: UNTIL VERSION 1.4 it will not be possible to OPEN THE .tsk IN
MULTIPLE COMPUTERS AT THE SAME TIME, even though they can otherwise share
the file."

Now, the question:
When can we expect the 1.4 released?
Aproximate date?

Thanks!
(I insist because i got in love with taskcoach's simplicity and ability to
configure for myself, now there's no online service or simmilar that seems
valuable to me, jaja)
(We just need syncing so much for team work!)

It's called libavahi-compat-libdnssd1 on 12.04. Anyway, I added it to the .deb's dependencies so you shouldn't have to install it by hand. More, if it wasn't installed you wouldn't even get to the "Connecting" screen. Anyway, I'm myself using an up to date Ubuntu 12.04 with a 6.1.3 iPhone 4S so it's probably not OS related.

A network dump (using Wireshark for instance) of what happens when you try to sync could help.

Greetings, After some weeks, I went to sync my iPod Touch (iOS 6.1.3) to my Ubuntu (64-bit 12.04) system, and after selecting my machine on the iPod Touch, I get the "Connecting..." screen, and the app seems stuck there.

This worked fine approximately a month ago, when I last did a sync. Since then I've applied a number of OS updates on Ubuntu, and at least one on iOS. I have the most up to date versions of Task Coach for Ubuntu and the Task Coach app on iOS. Per the wiki FAQ, bluetooth is turned off on the iPod Touch.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app on my iPod, and that didn't help.

I did note that the wiki FAQ page for setting up sync indicates "...the Avahi daemon is running and that the libdns-compat package is installed." the daemon is running, but I don't have that package, and I can't find it available anywhere. Is this instruction still accurate, and if so, where would I find it for 12.04?

Any suggestions for how I could debug this?

Thanks,
Derek

Bienvenidos!

Lo siento, Task Coach no es perfecto.

All tasks within a parent task will inherent the categories.

The way to do this is: Do not make a parent task that is really a category.

Make a category for each type of general subject. Make a category called "team" or "people" and under that make subcategories for each team member.

You can also make categories for each type of task.

I suggest using parent tasks only for things that you can actually mark as "complete"

Note also: until version 1.4 it will not be possible to open the .tsk file on multiple computers at the same time, even though they can otherwise share the file.

Quiero que Task Coach sea mejor ahora, pero tenemos planeas para majorarlo. Nos manden preguntas si Uds tenian.

Saludos,
Aaron

Hello! This is the use we pretend to give to TaskCoach:
We're just new experimenting with it.
If you read anything that inspire you a suggestion, please say it!

We are a 3 persons group that want to manage their
common project tasks inside one principal .tsk file
kept in a syncronized folder by Wuala (=Dropbox) between our 3 computers.
That file would be edited by the three of us.
The assignment of a task to a person would be donde by creating one categorie for each person.

We created a .tsk with a tree structure that represents the organazitation of our Bussinnes (it has many levels of subtasks sometimes).

Now the question is, Task Coach is thought to administrate tasks. Were would they be stored? All together?
No, that would be a mess, and it's how we were before trying this software, so doesnt make sense.

As we want to keep tasks (wich are temporary elements that appear and dissapear, because i'm talking about real tasks. i make this difference because 'task' is the name of an generic element t

Getting also na errors message when closing Takscoach and a taskcoachlog.txt file has been created in my user folder.

(Tried to delete and install again the app with no difference).

[ANN] Release 1.3.26 of Task Coach

Hi,

We're happy to announce release 1.3.26 of Task Coach. This is a bugfix
release.

Bugs fixed:
- Exporting efforts in CSV with the 'Period' column and date/time splitting
  would not work. (SF#1387)
- Task Coach would not launch on OS X 10.6 and later. (SF#1388, SF#1390)

Regards,

Frank Niessink, Jerome Laheurte, and Aaron Wolf
Task Coach development team
