OK...I'm a little ashamed that it took me this long to get my site back up.
A little explanation if you want...I run two ESXi servers at home. All my Newton stuff (web server, SQL server, Cold Fusion server) was sitting on one server. This ESXi server hosted other outward facing sites as well.
The other server hosts my internal stuff...SharePoint, another website, IP Cam repository, plus another SQL server (to host my SharePoint site). This server is configured for internal connections only. This, along with strong firewall rules and separate networks keeps the traffid separate.

I figured that instead of building a new SQL on my external ESXi server</pre>

Nope, no such luck.
I ran into so many problems due to my paranoid security techniques, it was darn-near impossible for me to get the internal SQL to see the external IIS server...

I hope that the reason you are hanging around a hospital is not
serious.

In the situation you are in I would likewise be very cautious about
making changes.

This prompts me to open a discussion of what might be best practices
as recalled by a long time reader of this list, and one who has lost
data.
I hope others will chime in as my non-expertise is revealed.

1. Heap is your system memory and is where tasks get done. Both
Dashboard and Avi's backdrop report available heap. I freeze Packages
and Extensions that I'm not using to keep this as high as possible
especially if I'm saving a Newton book as an HTML Works file or using
NewtsCape to create a Newton book. All installed packages including
extensions are using heap unless frozen.

2. Keep some percentage of memory stores empty, I attempt to not
exceed 75% of capacity of my internal and primary card. I use a
secondary card for large tasks that may cause a freeze up or system
reset due to not enough heap.

<pre>Gotta agree with Simon--make room however you can on the Newt by copying internal data to storage card.

Unfortunately I can't think of any solution that doesn't ultimately involve backing up both internal and storage memory, brain wiping the Newton and formatting the storage card, and restoring both from the backup(s).There's still no guarantee of success, but it seems like it should work.

Thanks,

So it’s a storage (= disk) problem, not to do with the heap (= RAM). Let’s park that out of the way.

Those numbers looks right; the internal capacity of a MP2100 is 3,523K. Nothing has disappeared into a black hole. I’m wondering though -- and this may be a good time to sit down if you aren’t already -- whether bad flash blocks that are mapped out of the available space count as ‘used’ (rather than reducing the store’s capacity). I don’t have experience (fortunately) of the characteristics of store failure, someone with hardware knowledge would better help here. Sorry to drop this bombshell, but it might cause an unexpected sudden loss of available space, no?

I can’t think of a tool that would itemise what’s using that ‘used’ space; does one exist?

If you File items in Storage onto a different store, you are operating on the soup entries on the store, not the store as a whole. The entries are moved: they are copied from the source store to the target and then deleted from the s</pre>

<pre>BIG thanks to everyone who's written to me about this here or directly. It
feels better even if Newt is still sulking at me. :-)

I should've given more helpful information about my Newt in my first e-mail
but I'm spending a lot of time hanging around a hospital -- no phone, no
computers, no outside world please -- and I produced that first message in
haste. Unfortunately obligations here aren't even giving me time to make
soothing, cooing noises at Newt in the hope of wooing her back into more
co-operative mood.

In response to suggestions and questions so far, let me explain and clarify
some things I should have included before. I also have more questions!
Sorry, this'll be long, but I've tried to space it to be easy on the eyes.

The fundamental data, the numbers:
Memory Info reports
Internal used: 3374K free: 149K
Card used: 4438K free: 15105K

Incidentally, I tried the soft reset (button at the back for 4 seconds) as
soon as it happened. No change.

<pre>
I can’t offer a solution to your missing store space, Christian, but at the mention of MailV I felt compelled to jump in.

I believe there is a problem with the Newton OS store system.

There, I have said it. Specifically, if you allocate a Virtual Binary Object (VBO) and subsequently resize it so it becomes smaller, the difference in size is not reclaimed by the OS. There are no pointers to this lost space and it is unrecoverable; a reformat of the memory is required to regain it.

The problem shows up in MailV because allocating and resizing VBOs is what MailV does all the time. I can’t believe MailV is the ONLY app to do this, but I have no data for other apps.

If you haven’t changed the way you work, and available memory has been in line with your expectations over time, then I doubt the this is the cause of a sudden drop in free store space.

I would try Tony’s and Woody’s suggestions - and don’t worry, it’ll be fine!

Simon

I believe your misfortune could be at least partially caused by the

<pre>Bear with me if you have already tried some of these ideas:

* Reboot
* If reboot works, when you get bk to base: try SBM Utilities; terrific for
checking for errors and sometimes it can repair soups.
* If reboot works, try moving soups to your card and see what happens; I
know that some apps require their soup to be stored internally but all you
want to do is free up some space so that you can get going again. But it
won't identify what the trouble is.

This is what comes immediately to mind, I'm sure others will chime in with
potential fixes

<pre>If anyone can help with this I¹d be grateful.

I¹m away from home for an extended time due to an emergency. The worse news
is that Newt has chosen NOW to have a problem. I have a MP2100.

When I try to do something with Newt I get an error message telling me that
either my internal memory or mydata storage card is almost full. It
shouldn¹t be the data card because there¹s still about 15MB free on it, but
the internal store shows only 152KB is still free. I didn¹t see this
coming.

Let¹s see if I can give some useful preliminary information.

I can¹t find any sign of what is taking up all that space all of a sudden so
I don¹t know what to do about it. I¹ve looked at all my soups and nothing
shows anything like enough to take up serious space. When I add up the
numbers I don¹t get even quarter-way to the amount of space that¹s supposed
to be used up.

I have no idea how to check what kind of space is used by applications but

WTB: PalmTree case

<pre>Hello,

I'm looking for a PalmTree, flip-top style case for a Messagepad 1x0. Here's a
pic:

Please let me know your asking price, shipped, for the case.

Shipping will be to zip 95132 (CA, SF Bay Area/San Jose). Despite repeated
pleadings, my mailman continues to handle my mail as though it's some sort of
personal affront, so I need this shipped in a cardboard box, please. In fact,
the Small Flat Rate Priority Mail box (the one about the size of an old VHS
cassette) would be perfect for this. Of course, if you want to ship the case to
me Parcel Post (or FedEx Ground) that's fine, too, just so long as it's shipped
in a cardboard box.

I can pay via PayPal or (im)personal check, seeing as how PayPal is anathema to
some folks. If you take Paypal, please be sure to tell me if you have the
ability to accept both balance transfer and credit card-funded payments, or only
the former. If you prefer a check, I understand that the check will need to
clear before </pre>

<pre>Hello,

In the interests of preventing something like this from happening to another
Newton user, can anyone who travels extensively recommend a
compact-yet-effective "international" surge suppressor?

While I think of it, nothing ever came of this:

..did it?

<pre>Cheers Stefan! I'm sure we all understand what a big job you have undertaken, but i guess a few got a bit worried hearing nothing for three last few weeks.

Thank you for responding and clearing up any issues :)

Kind regards

Grant, apologies for using the list in this manner. I need to broadcast a message to those waiting to hear from me.

I've been silent but not gone. I've just returned from an unexpected 3 week stint in the black hole of communication in rural Alberta. I arrived home to discover one of my children gained access to my PC and managed to delete my PST file. $40.00 dollars later and some serious blue air...I was able to restore it. Neither one will admit being the culprit for fear of my wrath. I guess they'll both feel it. Not to mention SHE WHO SHALL BE OBEYED because without her, they would not have gained access to the PC </pre>

OK, so I'm back online and piecing things back together. Do NOT fear! I have everyone's requests. I just haven't been able to respond directly. If you received my broadcast email back in April I think I mentioned that everyone should be seeing what they </pre>

<pre>John accidentally fried his Newton by plugging it into an allegedly-safe 220 V outlet, which possibly was powered by "dirty" AC current. Through the advice of various folks on NTLK he has replaced the damaged capacitor, but it still won't power up.
