New to Praat here. Trying to set up a perceptual experiment with manipulated stimuli. In an effort to remain as close to natural speech, I would like to reuse some sentences I have recorded in the past and resynthesize the vowel formants --to produce glides among other things.
I'm not sure how this can be done in Praat. Could someone point me in the right direction please?

Thank you,

but a workaround for your problem in this case would be to save the output

So, instead of

After all, judging from the command you are trying to use, this seems to me
to be a more efficient way of doing what you want.

so it's not, I guess. The text windows are not scriptable. I could make them scriptable just by telling them that they are, and in that case you would have to do

editor Praat Info
do ("Save as...", "out.txt")

But I would have to think about whether strange interactions can happen or not.

if I use the following expression in a script:

appendFile ("out.txt", info$ ())

it does only save the content of the Info window which is generated by the script. If I edit the content (before the expression is called) these modifications are not saved. In other words, the expression ist not equivalent to the "Save as..." command in the Info window's file menu. Is this a bug or a feature? If it is a feature: Is it possible to emulate the "Save as..." command in a script?

Thanks again,

fixed$ (a, 2) means a precision of two decimal digits after the decimal point. I.e., the number 5 is represented as "5.00". That is what it means. Rounding is done to the nearest two digits, so up or down. For numbers that you think end in 5, you might expect rounding up. However, the numbers above cannot be represented exactly in computer memory, so their actual values are slightly below 0.045 and 0.075, for instance, so they round down. You can see this by doing fixed$ (0.045, 20), which yields "0.04499999999999999833".

<pre>Hi,

using the fixed$-function I came across a strange rounding behavior. With the expression

b$ = fixed$ (a, 2)

I get the following results (values of "a" in the first column, results in the second):

0.005 0.005
0.015 0.01
0.025 0.03
0.035 0.04
0.045 0.04
0.055 0.06
0.065 0.07
0.075 0.07
0.085 0.09
0.095 0.10

I think the result in the first row is intended, right? But what about rows 2, 5 and 8?

Thanks,
Jörg

I would like to ask for help on a really strange yet frustrating issue with scripting in Praat. It's the simple matter of naming a variable. The following script will not work on my machine (and I write and run hundreds of lines of praat scripts on my machine daily right now):

------------------------------
div=2

if div&gt;0
printline div is greater than zero
else
printline div is smaller than zero
endif

The error message is this:

---------
Symbol misplaced:
« div
Script line 3 not performed or completed:
« if div&gt;0 »
Menu command "Run" not completed.
----------

The way to fix this is really easy. simply change the variable name 'div' into 'divo', or any other name that isn't exactly this one. I wonder what is the restriction placed on this name? (it's not html:) and I have ran into other similar issues before. Since I don't read anywhere that these are restricted, I don't know what could possibly be the problem.

The problem also only occurs when being ev</pre>

However, I didn't say arrays "are not there". You've already said that they
exist.

I was thinking of what you said the last time arrays were (briefly)
discussed on this list.
That time you said that arrays were undocumented, so clearly they are not
what is currently
documented as arrays in the Praat manual and what musilinguist is trying to
use here.

You've said so yourself:

yes. This is not because (as José says) there are no real arrays, but because the trick with the apostrophes does variable substitution. It would work, for instance, if you wrote

 printline 'text$[1]'+'text$[2]'

This prints out "hello+world". The "+" is outside the computation here. The following does what you want:

 total$ = text$ [1] + text$ [2]

As you see, indexed variables work just as array elements for all purposes of computation. The following also works:

appendInfoLine (text$ [1] + text$ [2])

<pre>That is because, at least until now, what we normally call arrays in Praat
are not really arrays. Indeedn, at least I have so far not been able to
find any difference between something like text$[i] and something like
text'i'$.

Paul has said on this list in the past that apparently there _are_ what may
be called true arrays in Praat, but they are as of yet undocumented (and I
at least have not been able to figure out how to use them).

In any case, until the recent changes in the syntax of Praat scripts, you
wouldn't have been able to do what you want without using temporary
variables:

This has now been greatly simplified:

<pre>Hi,
I wonder if string arrays in PSL is like a char array in Java. It seems it really stores individual characters, 'h', 'e', one for each element, so that a script like this will not work:
--------------------------------------------------
text$ [1]= "hello"
text$ [2]="world"
printline 'text$ [1]'+'text$ [2]'
--------------------------------------------------
it actually prints out 'text$ [1]'+'text$ [2]' instead of using the array elements "hello world".

If so, is there a way to do a real string arrays that store multiple characters in each element of the array? Thanks!
Shuo

If you are familiar with R statistics program, there is a package called gdata with a function for reading contents in Excel files. I find it very useful. Hope that helps.
