<pre>I renamed the .fldigi directory to something like fldigi_backup.

Launched fldigi and re-entered my data into the operator fields. My
original TS-590.xml file was old, so I got the latest one. There were
some differences, namely bandwidth data fields. Copied my macros file
back into position, and everything looks great.

I've been happy with Debian 7 + MATE (Gnome2 fork). My procedure is to
install the basic Debian + XFCE desktop (no Gnome3 at all). Then
followed the instructions on the MATE .org site for Debian. Each to his
own.

<pre>The discrepancy between the 32 and 72 may be a typo on your part.....

It appears that you forgot the -(dash) before the xzf switches unless
that is also a typo. The GNU specs requires a single dash before the
abbreviated switch and double-dash (--) before the expanded form of the
switch:

sudo tar -xzf $HOME/tarballs/fldigi/fldigi-3.21.72.bin.tgz

A slightly more efficient form for using tar might be:

$ cd ~/tarballs
(download correct file then)
$ sudo tar -xzf fldigi-3.21.72.bin.tgz -C /usr/local.

The -C switch tells tar to cd to the /usr/local folder before executing
the -xzf switches.

If there are any spaces in the filepath, enclose the arguments in quotes
so the system can parse them correctly.

<pre>Peter,

You indicate that "The audio is working through the USB cable..." I
noticed that set mode 45 switches the USB connector between CI-V
commands and RTTY decode. The Windows driver purchased from icom might
provide this capability automatically on Windows. On Linux, It may be
necessary to run a separate audio cable from the ACC connector to the
audio input/output of the PC and set mode 45 to CI-V.

As the IC746Pro does not have a USB connector I had to use the audio
from the ACC connector.

<pre>Ed,

Actually, looking at the photo in the IC7410 user manual, at first
glance, one could mistake it for the IC746PRO as only a few buttons are
in a different position.
Also, the command stream uses the same preamble and end-of-message hex
characters. These may also be consistent among all Icom transceivers.
I think I still prefer my IC746Pro, if only because it covers the 2
meter band and the IC7410 doesn't.

Agreed about time being expensive. I hold my limited home time more valuable than work time. It's a good exercise for those so inclined, and I'd delve into the source code if time allowed. My own work in IT is exceedingly mundane compared to fldigi, radio, satellites, space, signal decoding, etc. But there are no such jobs in my neck of the woods. Maybe it's possible to live one's career vicariously through hobbies...

Back to the reporting--

I made some PSK31 contacts last night. But noted that the LCD display on the TS-590S and the fldigi frequency indicator occasionally got out of sync, when clicking about twice/second in fldigi to change the freq. The rig seemed a bit sluggish to respond. For example, if both the rig and fldigi were set to 14.070 and I tapped the "7" twice, making it 14.050 on fldigi, it might still be at 14.060 on the rig.
<pre>I have the IC-7410's brother, the IC-9100. I was having trouble with a few of my favorite programs (JT65HF for one) that did not generate the PTT command using the CI-V interface. I had earlier purchased an FTDI 232R-5V USB to Serial TTL cable and configured it to supply CI-V Cat and control.

I adapted this cable for hardware PTT for the IC-9100. I am sure those same modifications and additions would work for the IC-7410 as well. If anyone is interested, I will post the very simple and low cost interface in the files section or send it direct via e-mail.

<pre>Peter,

I was doing a little searching today and came across this newsletter from a
Canadian ARC. On page 6 (I think) there is an article about using the 7410
with fldigi. I didn't read the article so I'm not sure if it's for fldigi
on Windows or Linux... If it it's for Windows, it should at least get you
pointed in the right direction as far as settings.

Here's the link to the newsletter:

Hope it helps!

<pre>Am I actually reading here, that everyone prefers to spend 10 minutes compiling software from source, over the approximately 30 seconds that it takes to install a precompiled binary?

As exciting as compiling from source is, and as much fun as my job is creating software, I much prefer to have an RPM that installs in seconds (Yes, I run Fedora, not a Debian derivative - Not that there is anything wrong with Debian.)

Sorry, Lazy computer user here. I want to run the software now, not ten or fifteen minutes from now. My time is very expensive, just ask my employer (o: I'd rather spend it operating my radio, not tinkering around with dependencies.

And stop now if you are about to reply to me about the efficiency gained by compiling - My quad core processor doesn't care. It's still a net loss when compared to the time to "./congiure make make install".

My opinions of course - Not to take away from your own (o:

Congratulations on installing malware into your computer.

I really shouldn't, but I still find it hard to believe that people are still clicking on these links.

<pre>Ed,

I have used this rig and computer configuration before using Windows and HRD and it worked, also I did not install the CP210x driver on Ubuntu as I did in Windows. The audio is working through the USB cable as I see the waterfall and can decode cw but still unable to control the rig.
