I get a very similar problem on Debian Wheezy (which reports dvdauthor
version 0.7.0-1.1+b2):

I'm using the following control file:

<dvdauthor dest="outputdir">
  <vmgm />
  <titleset>
    <titles>
      <video format="pal" aspect="16:9" />
      <pgc>
        <vob file="video.mpg" />
      </pgc>
    </titles>
  </titleset>
</dvdauthor>

If I run:
export VIDEO_FORMAT="pal" ; dvdauthor -x dvdauthor.xml
then I get 5 files: VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO
and VTS_01_1.VOB. Checking these 5 files with mediainfo returns:

$ mediainfo * | egrep "name|aspect|Standard"
Complete name                            : VIDEO_TS.BUP
Display aspect ratio                     : 4:3
Standard                                 : NTSC
Complete name                            : VIDEO_TS.IFO
Display aspect ratio                     : 4:3
Standard                                 : NTSC

Another yet related question:

In attempt to just have one titleset(and avoiding having a wrong format of
the first titleset) I tried this:

<dvdauthor>
         <vmgm />
         <titleset>
             <titles>
                 <pgc>
                     <vob file="C:\Users\user\Desktop\EFC
test\MVI_4994.mpg"/>
                 </pgc>
             </titles>
         </titleset>
</dvdauthor>

This creates only one titleset which reads PAL/NTSC correctly in MediaInfo,
however the 3 resulting files are called VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO,
VTS_01_0.VOB, which means that standalone players can't start the dvd
because they look for VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB.

So the question for me is how should the XML look for a simple pal dvd
which plays in standalones?

I'm using dvdauthor 0.7.1 on windows(build from 20. of Aug.), and I'm very
puzzled why VIDEO_TS.IFO is NTSC when checking it with MediaInfo, even
though I use an XML file like this:

<dvdauthor format="pal">

         <titleset>

         </titleset>

No, this is a limitation of the DVD-Video spec itself. If you look at
the detailed instruction layouts at
<http://dvdnav.mplayerhq.hu/dvdinfo/vmi.html>, you will see that a
conditional JumpTT instruction (the green line below the
NOP/Exit/Jump/Call lines) only allows both operands being compared to be
registers, there is no option for comparing a register to a literal
value. Comparing a register to a literal is only allowed for goto/link
instructions (top two green blocks) and conditional-set instructions
(bottom green block in that top table). So dvdauthor compiles your
statement above to multiple instructions (using a goto), which will not
fit into a cell command.

The only way around this is to set up your own manual redirect—perhaps
instead of trying to jump directly to title 1, you jump to another cell
which contains an unconditional “jump title 1” command. This might be a
dummy cell that shows a fraction of a section of a black screen, or
something.

Thanks to Jean-Pierre for providing the sample file that triggered this
error. I have investigated it, and determined it terminates with a
truncated VOBU, consisting of just a NAV pack and nothing else. The
last part of an mpeg2desc dump looks like this:

032e7000: mpeg2 pack hdr, 94.653 sec
032e700e: system header; length=18
032e7026: pes private2, PCI; length=980
032e7400: pes private2, DSI; length=1018

In short, this is a malformed input file. It can be very easily
converted to a valid file, by passing it through FFmpeg, e.g.:

ffmpeg -i <input-file> -target pal-dvd -acodec copy -vcodec copy <output-file>

The above assertion failure arises from dvdauthor trying to guess at a
value for the missing time in the nonexistent VOBU contents, and coming
up with an inconsistent answer. I have changed the code to display more
information, including the offset of the offending sector within the
input file at which such problems are found. The output from dvdauthor
now looks like this:

STAT: Processing VTS_08_1.

I don’t think there’s any such thing as “stopping” a DVD disc once it
starts. If you want to return to a menu, you need to put one in and end
the title with a transfer to that. If you want a black screen, you need
to put in video that shows that.

Sorry for the delay, yes, it would be useful if you can supply a sample
input video file that illustrates the problem.

if I specify conditional cell command such as "if (g0 == 1) jump title 1;", I get error

But some other software (e.g. DVDReMake) supports cell conditional commands.
And I also didn't find this restriction at

Is it possibly a bug in dvdauthor?

Cheers,

Hi,

I was using dvdauthor in the past and never remember having much of a problem. I used this for simple dvd:

mkdir DVD && export VIDEO_FORMAT=NTSC && dvdauthor -o DVD --title -f input.vob && dvdauthor -o DVD -T

But I notice recently it seems to not autoplay (or play at all) in many players and I'm not sure what went wrong? Unless this started happening with the release of Mountain Lion (I'm using Mac) I'm not sure also? Can someone tell me if anything looks wrong with my command line? The structure created and everything appears to be just fine and no errors are generated, but still having this autoplay issue. Thanks!

Hi,

When I launch my vob file using VLC, I heard sound, and I see video.
The .vob file comes from a dvd of a personal video (from a video recorder).

If it can help you, I can share a .vob file (45 Mb), witch I have the problem.
Note also, that I use DVDStyle (that use dvdauthor). First, I open a bug here : http://sourceforge.net/p/dvdstyler/bugs/503/

Note also, that I have the same behavior this a .vob file from a commercial dvd.
DvdAuthor.exe display 0.7.1 version.

My original problem is simple : I have on DVD1 2 videos (A and B), and on DVD2 2 videos (C and D), and I need to create a new DVD with videos A and C.

Source video DVD :
- DVD1 : A & B
- DVD2 : C & D
Wanted output (video DVD) :
- DVD3 : A & C

But i don't want to lose video quality. So I try to not reencode video...
Thanks for advance for your help...

Jean-Pierre
