<pre>Funny, I seem to receive more care and feeding now than when we WERE a novell shop. Still have Zen at least, and it looks like we'll probably keep it. Of course, living a few miles from Microsoft we got a hard sell about the 'advantages' of the local company - none ever panned out, but by the time it was obvious the commitment was made. I've done more migrations for customers than I care to remember, and while they turned out well it seems business can't understand opportunity costs and IT can't understand performing a valid comparison. But then, IT is fundamentally a business function, and business logic is an oxymoron that always cracks me up.

These days we seem to be fighting against being consumed by the Apple machine, and I can't see why we need to fight it. Users appear much happier, better practical security, etc. The only downside I can see is that neither IOS nor OS X require as much care and feeding than windows.....

<pre>HI,

Ya well Bud, i must agree somehow... we are a 13 000 user shop and at
times we also feel forgotten .. we are also FAR away from our closets SA
novel branch, i think there are actually only 3 in the country ..
partners are all alo based in and around the Novell offices .. training
same story, but must say the same issues on the M$ .. althought for a
while now they are on our doorstep trying to get in .. luckily the
Novell stuff been solid over the years.... not 100% but good enough to
make some people keepong the dark side at a distance....BUT as always it
is a battle of note ... and HERE IS THE thing, i am about alone in my
quest, ssupporting the backend for the 13000 users....try to sort out
vibe and learn this on your own, between your normal work... not easy
sometimes i caught myself thinking if we were a M$ shop we would be 40
guys and i can relax ... and ask other support guys what is going
on...NOW EVERYTHING is on me alone ... things you would do for your love
on Novell ..

Kind Regards,

<pre>Therein lies the problem for us. We are a simple manufacuturer of
plastic caps and jars, under 200 users, located about 100 miles from the
nearest "big" city. Novell started ignoring us (as in "this type of
account") about 8 years ago. My last two contacts with Novell were
fairly aggressive e-mails from them demanding that I run their audit
software to prove that I had sufficient licensing.

Training? Forget about it. I have to travel 400 miles to get to the
nearest training center. None of the local computer support companies
offer Novell support of any kind.

<pre>Well drop box is a stand alone file system that you can share with anyone (and with their security model probable everybody...)

Filr is the same concept with your corp files store (ie normal mapped drives or whatever) that is now available to your mobile users on PCs/Laptops/MAC/iP*** and Andriods items, that you can also invite external users to partake in the fun...

So, yes, DropBox with a handful of amphetamines and some security - plus the mapped drive part (which is unique)

ubuntu (70days), then i will have to make the decision and stick with
it........ it is just sad that Novell promotes opensource BUT to get
their desktop applications to run on linux desktops is a mess .. SLED
about the only one working out of the box .. but there are some
limitations on that as well .. anyway sounds like the suse guys not
really interested to make any commitment on that ...

We are fully 'MAD' today or in other words Micro$oft Active Directory.

If you want to see Netware in action again, fire up VMware server free edition on your pc and install Netware.

Is it still supported by the way ?

<pre>Yes, I'm sure Cal's right here. The need for support is relatively low, and particularly for those with .edu or the like, Novell looks after us very well.

For those of you who don't keep up with the news, take a look at http://www.novell.com/products/filr/ to see what sort of things are on the horizon.

By default with OES Apache is run as user www:wwwrun and that is
LUM enabled. You can easily see that by looking in eDir.

Anyone know if/how Apache can be LUM enabled on OES2? That would be for pages requiring authentication of course.

It's Knoppix 6.7 something, relatively recent.

Actually, I take your comments on the date stamps as support for my
supposition. The stamps on the /dev/cciss/blah are today, those on the
/KNOPPIX/dev/cciss/c1d1 are yesterday and those on
/KNOPPIX/dev/cciss/c1d0 are 4 years past.

I was just hacking about attempting to find the actual device and noticed
that. May be a herring of a different color.

Booted to OES, I can do "dd if=/dev/cciss/c1d0 of=/dev/null" and then
ctrl C, to see that stuff went to the bit bucket.

I guess that means I have to search out where Knoppix "says" the device
is.

<pre>
Hi Joe,

I don't have much to offer on the front of the cciss device (i try not
to use hardware RAID for boot disks), but let me clarify something: the
date stamp on a block device file is meaningless. It has nothing to do
with how old the disk is, or when it was last partitioned, or anything
like that. It is simply when the device node in the filesystem was
created, which on most Linux distros is when the system was booted.

In this case, it probably means you have a 4-year-old Knoppix CD, in
which case i would suggest trying a newer live CD (say, Ubuntu 12.04)
and seeing if that makes a difference. My gut suggests that you might
have hardware that is too new for the drivers on your Knoppix disk.

Regards,
Paul

<pre>Have you tried clonezilla live?
http://sourceforge.net/projects/clonezilla/?source=directory
I use the server edition for all my non-Mac imaging. For a once off, the
live version works great. Boot off the CD &amp; either clone to another drive
in the same computer, or boot a second machine with the CD (on the same
network, using static IP addresses) and clone to it.
