<pre>
When I was working on refactoring ExtUtils::ParseXS to work under 'use
strict' back in 2009-10, I had some scripts that identified the
breakdown on build tools. IIRC, ExtUtils::MakeMaker led Module::Build
by more than a 4 to 1 ratio. I suspect the ratio has stayed roughly the
same over time.

When we've ultimately done whatever we decide to do, it would be
interesting to have a retrospective on the course of M::B's development.
 What succeeded? What didn't? What can we learn about open source
software development?

Note: I am *not* recommending we have that discussion now. Let's have
a discussion and set a course of action first.

Thank you very much.

This is a bug report for perl from lindahl&lt; at &gt;pbm.com,
generated with the help of perlbug 1.39 running under perl 5.18.0.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
[Please describe your issue here]

In upgrading the blekko search engine backend to Perl 5.18.0, one of
our engineers noticed a change in the behavior in SvTRUE.

$ perl -MScalar::Util=dualvar -le 'print $]; $a = dualvar 1, ""; print $a ? "true" : "false";'
5.008008
false

$ perl -MScalar::Util=dualvar -le 'print $]; $a = dualvar 1, ""; print $a ? "true" : "false";'
5.016000
false

$ perl -MScalar::Util=dualvar -le 'print $]; $a = dualvar 1, ""; print $a ? "true" : "false";'
5.018000
true

Is this intended? We were surprised.

It became visible to us because some Graphics Magik functions return
an XS-gen</pre>

paragraph of the Description section seem to be almost the same. Is there
a better place to post this information?

I'd see how many currently indexed distributions have a Build.PL and
no configure_requires first, maybe.

But it's a trivial edge case to address.

Thanks. It also passed on everything I tried it on. I've pushed it to blead.

Sadly the two available sparc machines at the GCC compile farm are scheduled
to be decommissioned at the end of June, so I probably won't be able to test
on sparc for much longer. However, it does seem that the kernel bug is fixed.
Previously the test suite had been be able to create an unkillable busy
process. So it looks like it is now "safe" to run a blead smoker on 32 bit
sparc Linux.

Before configure_requires people put that dependency in
build_requires, so you could also try to extract it from there.

Yeah, that's quite a headache with no obvious solution :-/

+1 to get FCGI dependency out of CGI.pm and make a separate
distribution. My experience tells Mark Stosberg, current maintainer of
CGI.pm, is likely in favor of splitting out these kinds of
dependencies out of distributions.

The doc/perldoc/man command in the debugger is supposed to do something like
this:

$ perl -de0

Loading DB routines from perl5db.pl version 1.33
Editor support available.

Enter h or `h h' for help, or `man perldebug' for more help.

main::(-e:1): 0
 DB&lt;1&gt; doc perlrules
No manual entry for perlrules

In 5.18.0 it does this:

$ ./perl -Ilib -de0

Loading DB routines from perl5db.pl version 1.39_09
Editor support available.

Enter h or 'h h' for help, or 'man perldebug' for more help.

<pre>

Right now cpanm declares runtime dependencies to Module::Build (so
long as you install from CPAN clients, including itself) and doesn't
do special treatment to undeclared dependency to M::B like that.

Do you think I should change it to not declare M::B as cpanm's own dep
but auto-add Module::Build when Build.PL exists but configure_requires
isn't properly set?

I'd personally like to see it kept just because it's one less thing to
worry about with bootstrapping, but i see the whole argument with
configure_requires already supported, etc.

I'd love to get the slow tests fixed by then, although p5p isn't the
right place to discuss about that.

It's very rough.
