Your program doesn't segfault for me, neither with Gawk 3.1.6 nor with
the latest Gawk 4.1.0, also on Windows XP SP3. I suspect that your
Gawk is broken (there are quite a few broken ports to Windows floating
around). I suggest to switch to using this port:

  http://sourceforge.net/projects/ezwinports/files/gawk-4.1.0-w32-bin.zip/download

The above is the Windows port recommended by the Gawk maintainers.

I found that when I run the awk I've send to you and execute "awk -f fail.awk failhtml" the program just gets and Segmentation Fault.

What's wrong with it?

I am using gawk version 3.1.6 for windows under Windows XP 32 bit. Version of XP: 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.120411-1615).

Thanks in advance

Short answer: Your original code (at the end of this long post) is correct.

ARGC is a scalar variable (the number or arguments), ARGV is the array of
arguments. So ARGV[x]is correct, but ARGC[x] doesn't makes sense.

In addition, ARGC is a special variable, so you can't use this name for a

Thanks for taking care.

After looking twice, I noted that Annex B.2 (Compiling and Installing
gawk on Unix-like Systems) does not mention any "make install", whereas
annex B.3 (Installation on Other Operating Systems) does mention the
installation step.

So I suggest to mention "make install" in Annex B.2, in particular as
its title promises that this section is also about installing gawk.
