<pre>I count three separate threads to the mailing list in which you've asked
this; perhaps you are not getting responses immediately because your
setting for this mailing list is for (say) a daily digest rather than
receiving emails as they are sent?

The answer is, yes, such an extension most probably *can* be created (GNOME
Javascript, what extensions are written in, has some support for dbus; as
long as LibreOffice has a DBus API to support whatever actions you wish to
perform, this is achievable).

So, if you really wanted to, you could. However, why would you make this a
gnome-shell extension as opposed to (say) simply a python application, or
even a standalone GNOME Javascript application (could be run with the `gjs`
binary)? Is there any reason it needs to be tied to the shell? Does it need
any shell-specific capabilities? If not, then writing it as a standalone
script/application would at least mean non gnome-shell people could use it
too.

Hi

Without a generic graphics-server like xserver, compositors need to
handle input devices themselves if run as wayland compositors. To
avoid having several different conflicting implementations, I wrote up
a small proposal and library API to have a common configuration.

How is it currently handled?
A compositor uses udev to listen for input devices. For each
input-device, they use some heuristics (test for KEY_*, ABS_*, ..
event-bits) to figure out what kind of input is provided by the
device. Unknown devices and events are ignored, devices that look
useful are passed to the correct input-driver.
For keyboard input, libxkbcommon is used. For
mouse/touchpad/touchscreen input, every compositor has it's own simple
driver (I am not aware of an attempt to put xf86-input-synaptics into
an independent library). For other device types, applications handle
input themselves (gamepads, joysticks, and so on). And then there are
devices that hav</pre>

the problem: after a resume from suspend for a short period of time the
content of the desktop appears on the screen before the lock screen is
activated (System Settings -&gt; Brightness &amp; Lock -&gt; Require password ...
is activated).

This is not only visually annoying but may also leak information.

On my system the following trivial patch solves the problem.
(Does not test whether screen should be lock at all, though)

That said, I believe it would be far better to give LibO a UI that is
intrinsic rather than referencing M$ anomalies. The ribbon interface is
a failure IMHO. If its a great idea, then M$ has published a cheap
implementation instead. I will wholeheartedly vote in favour of status
quo than to see an M$-UI clone in LibO.

So, if you are hungry for change, design something new and more
functional and you'll have my support. As per Icon theme, I am
currently using LibO-4.0.3 with Faenza, so no special coding is
required.

Finally, please send this to LibreOffice mailing list

Storing the state of an application is really not easy thing to do.

If you only want to set startup applications and/or restore running
applications after re-login,
take a look at -gnome-session-properties. There are some extensions,
that add a direct link to
the user menu.

- https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/341/settingscenter/

If you want to restore your session after reboot you should consider
using hibernate/suspend.

extension...(I vaguely remember a "save session" button that there used to
be that would open all your windows etc for you when you logged in; I
assume that's what you're after?)

In terms of UI, there are typically two ways to do it:

* modifying various graphical elements in gnome-shell, like adding buttons
to the status area etc. These typically use the classes in imports.gi.St[1].
* Gtk-type UIs which use imports.gi.Gtk[2]. Each extension's preferences in
the preferences widgets is done using these.

For the sort of thing you have in mind, I recommend using Gtk and doing all
the UI stuff in the preferences widget.
The problem with this though is that the preferences widget and your
extension can't really communicate directly to one another; typically this
is done using Gio.Settings[3] (the prefs widget modifies a setting, and the
extension listens for the setting being changed).
(Note - for getting an idea of preferences widgets and </pre>

The idea I have is to add a simple season manager to the shell so that

The premise can be expanded to allow apps an opportunity to save their
current state to disk so that they can be restored to those states when the
system comes back up.

<pre>Hi Jason,

welcome :-)

I don't understand, you are a web developer so writing extensions shouldn't
scare you as it uses the same technology :-). The hardest part is the lack
of documentation, but you can look at the GS code that is here for
guidance, that is what I do:

/usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/

Depending on what you want to do, it may only take a line or two of code.

Best of luck,
Gabriel
