it seems to be riddled with bugs. That would be my solution. I've

with it jumping to full brightness, lowest brightness, randomly
deciding it is going to change while I'm touching it...I eventually
decided my BIOS was doing a better job.

At the moment no, but we've just added the needed interfaces to
systemd to make this kind of thing work in the future. The best way of
course would be to make the transcoding application run in the user
session.

Hello,

My application is a background server that transcodes videos and serves
them up to the user in different ways. We run the server as a specific
non-privileged user for security. Now, while transcoding and working we
would like to prevent the computer from being suspended by the power
manager, I have been looking around and found that you can post DBus
messages to the gnome-session to inhibit sleep/suspend, but it seems to me
that it can only be sent from the same user that is logged in since the
gnome-session bus seems private. Is there someway to tell the users
gnome-session to not go to sleep or another facility that I should talk to
from my daemon?

Thanks for your help,

Sure. Try taking the battery out of the machine and leaving it for 24

If you leave it for 24 hours, does it ever go above 5%? Have you tried

My old battery was severely the worse for wear. I replaced it and the
new one failed to charge properly. I sent that one back and got another.
This one too appears to charge poorly. The first one I could understand
is might be faulty, but two??

To be specific, it appears not to take charge when coupled to a power
source via is AC adapter.

At the present Indicator Applet 0.4.12 says "Battery charged" yet when I
click on where is says "Laptop Battery charged" and go to percentage it
says that it is only 4.7% charged. This is confirmed (??) if I pull out
the AC coupler when it says that the battery is discharging and only has
5% power left.

Installation was via Synaptic

Dbus: 1.4.6-1ubuntu6.1
Kernel 2.6.35um-0ubuntu-1
GPM version 2.32.0-2ubuntu2.1

Raw kernel info and gconftool as per attached

Right, in GNOME3 we don't save a startup brightness anymore. That
might be a bug, I'm not sure. For a lot of laptops the brightness is
set to 100% on boot and then seeing it drop at login does seem a bit
odd. Ideally we could set this at system start time.

At the moment, no. The main problem is that we need to use xrandr for
a lot of hardware, and that's only going to work when X is running, so
in GDM at the earliest. I'm open for suggestions.

hello,

I'm trying to fix a problem with my laptop that has been bothering me for
over a year now. There was a simple workaround in gnome2, but it no longer
works in gnome3, so any advice would be appreciated.

The problem is, there is some sort of a feedback loop on my laptop (MSI
PR200) in that setting display brightness by software generates an evdev
input event in the keyboard device. Similar thing apparently happens on
Samsung N130 series with samsung-backlight module, see [1].
Gnome-power-manager, or its equivalent on GNOME3, cannot handle the
situation and gets stuck in what I presume is a sorcerer's-aprentice mode,
reacting to events that result from its own actions. Sometimes this
feedback loop stops (my guess is a race condition), but that can take ten
or more minutes.
While this is happening, Xorg eats 100% CPU and keyboard mostly doesn't
work (all the normal key events are presumably spammed out by the
brightness events). In gnome2, this was also accompanied by unpleasant
backlight flicker. This
