Hi Jim,

Thanks much for suggestions. And please accept my apologies for not
replying sooner. Your reply got buried in lots of other list-serve
messages.

You asked: "Ensure xend is *not* running and then restart libvirtd. The
libvirt libxl driver will only load when xend is not running."

I'm a bit new at this, but I was under the impression that setting setting
toolstack=xl in /etc/default/xen would prevent xend from starting. That
is, I thought that xend wouldn't start when xl was running. Am I totally
wrong about that?

In any case, xl is running and if I try to send an xm command, I get the
following: "A different toolstack (xl) has been selected!" Is there
something else that I should try to insure that xend isn't running?

(As a reminder, if I set toolstack=xm in /etc/default/xen, virt-manager
works great. But I'm hoping to use the xl toolstack.)

You asked: "Did the libxl driver even load? There should be some evidence
of that in libvirtd.log."

My libvirtd.log doesn't seem provide any ev

This is not a good idea to have two NICs sharing the same MAC.

I guess nothing. Libvirt has generated the same IDs for two devices
which is obviously libvirt's faul even in case two NICs sharing the same
MAC. Can you post full domain XML (possibly with network XMLs)? I'll try
to reproduce and maybe I'll find what's wrong.

    <pf dev='eth1'/>

In VM configuration:
<interface type="network">

     <mac address="52:54:0a:b1:48:07"/>
</interface>

VM can't start because:
kvm: -device
pci-assign,configfd=24,host=01:10.1,id=hostdev0,bus=pci.0,addr=0x4:
Duplicate ID 'hostdev0' for device

libvirt version 1.0.5.

What i am doing wrong?

Is the host name in the URI referring to this vCenter? In this case
you need to use a vpx:// style URI:

virch -c vpx://vcenter-server/datacenter/esx-server?no_verify=1&auto_answer=1

See http://libvirt.org/drvesx.html#uriformat for more details.

But actually libvirt should complain if you use a esx:// URI to
connect to a vCenter server.

I am using virDomainSetBlockIoTune() API to set the IO tune parameter for a

I observed that after setting the value succesfully i ned to Shutdown and
start the VM inorder to take the set value in effect.

Is there any way with which these values come in effect in the same session
of the VM without Shutting down and starting the VM.

Please help

According to line number for esxVI_LookupManagedObjectHelper in the
debug log this looks like libvirt 0.10.2.1 actually.

First of all you found an error in the bug reporting here. The error
message should read just 'Could not find HostSystem'.

Anyway, the error says that libvirt couldn't find the HostSystem
object for that ESX server. This is quite unexpected.

What ESX server version are you using? Is this a standalone server? Or
is it managed by a vCenter server? Is it part of a cluster?

Correct.

No need to do this manually; connecting to a qemu:///session URI will do
it automatically under the hood on your behalf.

Correct.

Nope, it sounds like you got it.

Hello Eric,

Thank you for your thorough answer. Of course if I don't have to run
libvirtd as a privileged user, then I don't have any problem with
interacting with QEMU through the standard mechanism.

So just to summarize, this is what I understand would suffice for my Java
program to be able to manage VMs through the bindings:
1. Install QEMU, libvirt daemon and libvirt QEMU driver (no worries about
the distribution-specific package names).
2. Run libvirtd (probably with the -d flag?).
3. Run Java program with same user that ran libvirtd, using the QEMU
session (as opposed to system) URI.

Please correct me if I got anything wrong or if I'm missing another
dependency.

Thanks again, Lior.

The libvirt client & server are both multi-thread safe - you can have
multiple threads using the same virConnectPtr object & it'll do the
right thing with locking. So, yes, our recommendation is to use threads
in applications which need non-blocking behaviour

The only callbacks we have are for receiving event notifications. We
don't have any async methods in the libvirt core API

Yes, libvirtd is fully multi-threaded and thus will process requests
in parallel, even requests from the same client.

Depending your application, there is also the possibility of using the
slightly higher level libvirt-gobject library (part of the libvirt-glib
codebase). This library integrates with GObject and GIO to provide
async methods with callbacks on completion as you describe. The main
limitation of this library is that it doesn't have 100% coverage of the
current main libvirt APIs. It is being developed mostly to serve features
required by the GNOME boxes application, since that's the main user of
it currently. Of
