      I just finished chapter 8. I have placed it here:

      It took me much more time working through the computer code than I 
expected.

      Chapter 9 is the macro chapter. While I have a copy of this 
chapter, I know absolutely nothing about macros. (I do not even know how 
to run any of the macros that come with LibO. I really do not think I 
would be of any help for this chapter.

Yes, but, unsurprisingly, much of the book will focus on Writer. There's just 
so much more that you can do with styles in Writer than any other module.

There will also be lots about typography, so people have a better idea of what 
choices to make.

It's definitely not a death march through the menus, and maybe idiosyncratic 
in places. So far, I'm enjoying the writing immensely.

Dan, I think you were looking at one or both chapters? How's that
going? I'd really like to get this book done so we can move on to v4.
But if getting these two reviewed is a problem, then one possibility
is for me to make some snap decisions and publish them as they are,
then update them later if you or anyone else has corrections.

As some of you may already know, I've signed with Jean Weber and Friends of 
OpenDocument to do an advanced book on LibreOffice with the tentative title, 
"Styles and Templates in OpenOffice.org." The book will be released under a CC 
Attribution - Sharealike license.

I've been using LibreOffice and OpenOffice.org since the 1.0 release, but I 
may be posting the occasional question to the list. Meanwhile if anyone has 
ideas for content, or any questions they think I should cover, I welcome any 
feedback.

Oh, and for the record: I'm on chapter 3, and wallowing in paragraph styles.

I prefer the suggested "feature request" idea (although i'm not completely clear about the technical side of it) of creating some sort of "break" that doesn't create a paragraph break.  I think it's a more generic way of doing it rather than being limited to the ToC or Index.  

On the other hand your suggestion might be faster and easier to code?  I have no idea.  

Is anyone up for posting "feature requests" to let the devs choose which way might be best or easiest for them?

Jean, you got the exact term. ;)

To insert an index entry the user should:
- select the word or words that should appear in the ToC
- the go to Insert -> Indexes and Tables -> Entry.
- In the dialog that pops up choose Table of Context as Index
- Choose at what level the entry should appear in the index

I just remembered that there is a way to do what the OP wants. I think it involves a ToC index entry. I forget the exact term, and I can't check right now. I'll look it up later if someone else doesn't discover it first.

If the Index/tables settings allowed character as well as paragraph 
styles then that would have solved the problem. I would have thought the 
indexes would index by character styles.
