<pre>No. I was unaware of this web site. Thank you for posting it. What was
the last blocker?

BTW, is there a reason this information is not available on bugzilla.org
and/or the Bugzilla Wiki? Is the google web site linked from anywhere on
bugzilla.org or is it the official site now? If so, I missed that along
the way.

There's no mention of this anywhere that I can find on bugzilla.org or the
Wiki. If meetings are no longer applicable, I'd recommend updating the
wiki so that's clear.

You can hopefully see how the lack of information/updates conveys the
appearance I mentioned.

Now that 4.4 is imminent, it would be great to know where we are headed
(i.e. what to expect in 5.0). People in my organization are starting to
doubt Bugzilla and want to look at alternatives, and it's hard to give
persuasive arguments to the contrary when I can't answer the questions
being raised.

I agree.

The fact that we did no meeting since February 2012 is because this is
no longer needed. We did them because there was a lot of work going on
in parallel for Bugzilla 3.0, but now the back-end code rewrite is now
complete and such meetings are no longer necessary.

Everyone is free to start a fork of Bugzilla and rewrite it in Python.
But IMO, that's a whole separate project.

<pre>I've been doing Bugzilla development and admin'ing an installation for over
5 years and originally I didn't think a lot about this post. It seemed
like somewhat of an outrageous idea, but as I continue to wait for 4.4,
something that struck me in this last reply (which I also thought of right
before I read it):

  "It also likely shrinks the available pool of potential contributors.
  This may lead to fewer acceptable patches, fewer candidates to carry the
  torch when existing maintainers move on, etc."

This suddenly seems to be an issue and AFAICT, it appears that Bugzilla is
on the decline. :-( I have no data, but contributors seem to be down and
releases taking longer.

I have shied away from contributing myself for the last couple years for
various reasons, some that I suppose are attributable to Perl and some that
definitely aren't.

4.4 was supposed to be released months ago. 4.4rc2 finally came out in
February but I have not heard *anything* about the prospects for the final
release since then.  </pre>

<pre>It sounds like the landscape has changed since the proposal to consider languages/architectures was first raised. I am reluctant to take it on if there is little interest. There are plenty of bug trackers out there, so I'm not sure the world needs another.

I should say that I don't doubt that Perl or COBOL or whatever is "maintainable" indefinitely, but I'm not sure that's the point. Among the problems I was trying to solve was that (IMO) Perl requires a great deal of time and expertise to fully grok.* This leads to more project-specific, extra-language overhead (e.g., more complex coding conventions, more complex change processes, increasingly complex abstraction layers, etc.). It also likely shrinks the available pool of potential contributors. This may lead to fewer acceptable patches, fewer candidates to carry the torch when existing maintainers move on, etc. I realize there are (currently) many commercial entities that have put a bunch of eggs in the Bugzilla basket, but this does not guarantee immorta</pre>

I need to update the see also field of the bugs, I have

      $bug-&gt;set_all(\%set_all_fields);

But this fields are not enough to update the bug as the DB constraints are not satisfied. What other fields do I need?

much as any other modern development language.

Enhance Bugzilla WebServices to allow data access using REST

Bugzilla's extension framework is not great, but it is pretty good. It
does about 80% of what bugzilla.redhat.com (which I help maintain) needs
it to do.

It definitely is not 'done'. There are 2,353 open bugs in the upstream
project, and while all of them probably won't be implemented, a lot of
them will be.

In all honesty, I think porting Bugzilla to another language is a bad
idea. Bugzilla is 14½ years old now. I'm sure writing a new bug tracking
system from scratch (with a converter of course), is going to be better
than trying to keep up with the constant changes of the Bugzilla code base.

This of course, is no small task.

<pre>Perl 5 cannot be maintained for another 20 years.

Yes, COBOL gets maintained. But major new features get coded elsewhere, in
some other language/framework that isn't COBOL, and then the COBOL app
communicates with the elsewhere.

If your plan for Bugzilla's progress is to have Bugzilla communicate via
RESTful interfaces (or whatever replaces REST), then yes, the codebase
inside those interfaces can be with us for a great many years. If your plan
for progress involves a fair bit of extension to the core codebase, then a
plugins structure would be a good investment. Python has a good story when
it comes to plugins.

So I think that's the issue. Is the core stable/done, or will it grow
significantly ?

<pre>I just currently built a new server. On the server, I installed Bugzilla

My previous installation of Bugzilla was 2.2.2 is installed on a server
reaching end of life.

My initial plans was for my team to start using 4.2.5 with any new bugs.
There would be no legacy data on the new install. My team really likes
4.2.5, some of the functionality like "Deadline, Orig. Estimations, etc..

There has been to custom fields or anything changes to the Out Of The Box
UI.

Now that old server is about to be taken down and out of business. My team
is asking if I can import the data from Bugzilla 2.2.2 and store it as
archive data.

I am afraid that the versions are so far apart, that the database schema's
has to be different. And this can not be a easy migration. I have seen
post about how to migrate the old database to new Bugzilla install. They
create a new bugs database and places the data there.

But I don't want to lose anything from 4.2</pre>

Questions which assume things which aren't true or possible can be
answered any way :-) It's called "hypothesis contrary to fact".

Bugzilla is the result of an awesomely large amount of work, is still
being actively developed, and has people writing significantly-sized
addons and customizations (e.g. bmo). In order for the core Bugzilla
community to switch, the port would need to have achieved the same level
of reliability and stability as the current code, and BMO would need to
be able to switch. (Otherwise, half the community would need to spend
their time hacking on the old codebase, and that would make your job
harder as you try and keep up with them.)

A few years ago, it might have been possible for Mozilla to switch. As
things are, with dkl and glob doing so much customization work and
Mozilla-driven enhancements, and with Bugzilla being such a core bit of
software and needing such high availability and reliability, it seems to
me that the chances of a switch are very, very small.

stage, but I'm guessing if it happened, it would be in order to bring it in
line with the same frameworks and standards that other Mozilla web projects
such as AMO follow... ie ( https://github.com/mozilla/playdoh)

Might be interesting to see... but really can't say what the demand for it
would be.

<pre>I have been casually fantasizing about reimplementing Bugzilla in Python. I am aware of the Bugzilla:Languages page (and corresponding discussion page), but note that it hasn't undergone any revisions for over four years, and a lot has changed since then. For example, many of the "Cons" listed under Python may have been addressed in later releases, especially v3.***

If I were to make a sincere effort, I would concentrate on producing a faithful replica of the stable branch (with refactoring where appropriate to bridge any gap between the two languages/architectures/libraries such as template engines). In other words, I would not make any attempt to fix design issues or add new features in order to preserve as much value of the existing knowledge base as possible. Obviously competent help would be greatly appreciated, as this would not be my day job.

However, I am reluctant to embark on such an undertaking without having some assurances that the effort would be useful, or that it would be a realistic candid</pre>

The proper fix for this issue is at
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=852560

And will be in the next version of Bugzilla 4.0 and up.

<pre>Hi,

i fixed a bug to make bugzilla works under MySQL 5.6.
in fact, in /Bugzilla/DB/mysql.pm file on line 310, you need to replace
(improve code) with the following code:
my ($innodb_on) = &lt; at &gt;{$self-&gt;selectcol_arrayref(
         # q{SHOW VARIABLES LIKE '%have_innodb%'}, {Columns=&gt;[2]})};
         q{SELECT * FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.ENGINES WHERE ENGINE LIKE
'%Innodb'}, {Columns=&gt;[2]})};
     #if ($innodb_on ne 'YES') {
     if ($innodb_on eq 'NO') {
         die install_string('mysql_innodb_disabled');
     }

in fact in MySQL 5.6 variable have_innodb does not exist anymore instead
of that you need to use: SELECT * FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.ENGINES WHERE
ENGINE LIKE '%Innodb' and to test with NO as it can be DEFAULT or YES
for SUPPORT column.

HTH.
